An Ideal Christmas Gift from CNHSS Books

Croydon's Transport Through The Ages
By John B. Gent

The chapter headings are - 'Early roads' - 'Early railways and the Croydon Canal' - 'Railways' - 'Roads' - 'Buses' - 'Trams and trolleybuses' - 'Tramlink' - and 'Aeronautics and aviation'

Croydon had the first 'public railway' in the world and was the first town in the UK to be served by both canal and railway. The London & Croydon Railway had the first railway signals. Croydon is one of four places where atmospheric traction was used, and had the world's first railway flyover. Croydon had horse and electric trams, then trolleybuses, and now has electric trams again. It had the UK's first sodium street lighting, and the first light-controlled pedestrian crossing. Croydon Airport was virtually the birthplace of civil aviation.

All this, and more, is described and illustrated in this new book. 96 pages, with 222 illustrations in colour and black-and white, including historical and modern maps and superb colour reproductions of early maps and canal and railway scenes.

Published by and obtainable from our parent society, the CNHSS at 96A Brighton Road, South Croydon, CR2 6AD priced at £ 8.75 + £ 1 post/packing.
