A Walking Discovery

South Croydon Station Circular Walk via Park Hill and Lloyd Park (Approx. 3 miles)

As you come out of South Croydon Stn turn right and walk along the footpath, until you come to the footbridge. Take note of the small cottages and pretty footpath leading to Temple Road.

As you cross the footbridge look left for views of the Coombe Cliff and the water tower in Park Hill. Look right for views of Sanderstead, Purley and Riddlesdown. Cross footbridge and turn left through small housing estate, into Birdhurst Avenue. Follow this until you come to Coombe Road.

Take great care to cross the road and enter the park using the Coombe Cliff entrance. Stop to view Coombe Cliff, which was once the home of John Horniman, the tea merchant, built in 1850. Continue up the path into Park Hill to views of Central Croydon and water tower. Walk down along the left sided footpath, through gate into the walled herb garden (look out for the CMB Garden!). Come out of there and cross the grass towards the water tower.

Take the footpath on the tower's left and come out into Stanhope Road. Turn right and follow the signs for Fairfield Path towards Lloyd Park. Cross Park Hill Road, Brownlow Road, under the tram at Larcombe Close and into Lloyd Park. Cross Coombe Road into Campden Road. Walk along and turn right into Spencer Road.

Halfway down on the right is the entrance to a footpath which shows you the fascinating abandoned railway trackbed, which used to run from Woodside to Selsdon Road. Cross footbridge and continue along footpath straight back to South Croydon Station.
