The World of Croydon

www.croydon-lcc.org.uk is the web site of the recently revived Croydon Cycling Campaign, the local branch of London Cycling Campaign. Group coordinator and webmaster Jeremy Rickard has had a busy year since restarting the local group with group press officer Austen Cooper. I joined them about 6 months ago and took over the running of the newsletter.

Following a leaflet campaign in local libraries, our membership in Croydon is at last on the rise, and new faces are beginning to appear at monthly meetings, so we can at last begin to help tackle the problem of Croydon's outdated transport practices, and try and change attitudes amongst council officers and the politicians. However, we are in no doubt about the difficulties ahead; the missed opportunity to successfully integrate safe cycling and Tramlink and poor quality cycle facilities generally appear to have contributed to the 28% rise in cycling casualties between 1998 and 1999, and the 10% rise in pedestrian casualties in the same period points to a general deterioration in road conditions.

In the coming year we hope to make our mark on Croydon, encouraging more people out on the roads to cycle whilst getting the council focused on improving conditions on the roads and meeting their own targets to increase walking and cycling and reduce road traffic. We also hope to build better links with other environmental and community groups. One of the aims being to get a wide range of people involved in events such as Car Free Day and a festival of cycling, both currently being considered by Croydon Council.
