Membership News
New Members
We are delighted to welcome the following
into membership of the Society:
Ken Morcombe
Toby Jacobs
Colin Richards
It is with deep regret that I have to record
the death of Colin Richards. He had been severely affected by
progressive use of his fingers and arms and had been in and out
of Mayday hospital for nearly a year. He was transferred to Atkinson
Morley Hospital where he sadly died.
Colin had been a member for a very long time
and came to most of the talks and on the outings and walks. He
will be sorely mussed by his friends in the Society, manh of
whom visited him in hospital.
Jeanette Sherqin
we regret to record her death. She
was a long time member and at one time was our teamaker. She
will be sadly missed.
Data Protection Act
Members are reminded that the Data Protection
Act applies to the Croydon Society as to many other bodies. As
amended, it now applies to all records maintained by the
Society, not merely those (as previously) on computer files.
This article is aimed at drawing to members'; attention the fact
that we do hold records on our members - the membership records
- which record such details as name, address, telephone number
(in some instances) and amounts of subscription paid. Following
the introduction of Gift Aid, we are also maintaining records
of donations made which are subject to a Gift Aid declaration,
so that we can secure a tax refund from the Inland Revenue.
Name and address records are maintained on
computer file for the purposes of printing address labels so
that Croydon Focus can be delivered to you by other members or
by the Royal Mail.
Members are entitled to inspect the Society's
records and anyone who wishes to do so should contact the Membership
Secretary and Treasurer.
Statement from the Treasurer
At the Annual General Meeting I offered my
apologies to the assembled members and promised to repeat them
in the next issue of Croydon Focus. Given my need to meet the
printer's deadline for the publication of the AGM booklet, to
include the annual accounts, I left insufficient time for adequate
proof-reading, which led to the inclusion of three wrong figures
in the statement relating to the Publishing Fund.
I list below the Publishing Fund account entries
(in the left-hand cloumn) with the correct figures (in the right-hand
column). The corrections arose from the analysis of the previous
year's accounts; this led to some changes which were not carried
forward by me to the statement for 2000.

Book review by May Johnson - Ralph
McTell
Ralph McTell is a singer who writes his own
material and is famous for a song about an old man wandering
the street of London - a lonely figure.
In this book he tells of his early childhood
in Croydon in the Waldrons in a basement flat of a Victorian
Hose before the war. There are now high rise flats there as they
were condemned before the war. It tells of life as it was to
a small boy and contains some very good poetry and memories of
Croydon Streets and what children got up to. It is not his whole
life story and I look forward to hearing about his wanderings
and his thoughts on other parts of the world. It sells for £10.
